Gastric sleeve or sleeve gastrectomy and other forms of weight loss surgery including lap bands, gastric bypass, tube gastrectomy, are not commonly available in the public hospital system. Therefore, without health insurance, you must fund your surgery in the private hospital system. This can cost up to about $20,000 – including surgeons’ fees, dietician fees, anaesthetist fees, operating theatre fees and hospital stay fees.
When you have made your decision to undergo sleeve gastrectomy but are still without insurance, there are multiple options to help you cover the costs.
Join a health fund and make sure that they cover weight loss surgery – the item number for sleeve gastrectomy is 31575; and for gastric bypass it is 31572. Make sure that you have Gold level of coverage.
The government allows you to access your super in order to fund a lifesaving surgery that is not commonly available in the public hospital system. Contact our office on (02) 4323 7000 so that our staff can point you in the right direction for early release of superannuation funds

Of the $20,000 cost for uninsured patients, a small amount will be re-claimable from Medicare. Personal circumstances differ and it is best to seek advice from your financial advisor.
