In many of our sleeve gastrectomy patients, we observe that their diabetes and need for insulin resolves long before their weight loss occurs.
We also know that diabetics who lose weight by means of crash diets do not get a cure for their diabetes – unlike patients who lose weight by means of gastric sleeve.
This means that weight loss surgery has additional effects on the body’s mechanisms to counter diabetes more than just the weight loss achieved.
These are very exciting findings as it means that sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgeries may become much more standard treatment for diabetes than the traditional medications and insulin injections.
