Lap band/gastric band-Central Coast Surgery

Posted on 27 Sep, 2010

The issue of pregnancy and weight loss surgery often comes up in discussions with patients. Generally, there are no problems with falling pregnant after weight loss surgery. There are no effects on the baby nor the course of pregnancy.

However, I don’t recommend it. Making a decision to undergo lap band surgery or sleeve gastrectomy surgery is quite a life-changing decision. To become pregnant in the midst of this just makes life extremely complicated. The dietary adjustments necessary for pregnancy and weight loss do not necessarily go hand in hand. The lap band can be loosened up but then it is not actually doing anything during this period of time.

I would recommend that patients wait at least about twelve months after pregnancy before undergoing surgery. This is so that maximum benefit can be gained out of weight loss surgery whether it be lap band or sleeve gastrectomy
