Cost of gastric sleeve/lap band surgery

At the Central Coast Surgical Clinic, we do not wish to have the cost of surgery influence the type of weight loss surgery that you decide to have. If you have health insurance, the once off up front fee of $3,500 applies whether you choose to have lap band surgery, gastric sleeve surgery, gastric bypass or revisional surgery from one form to another.

Removal of lap bands are removed free of charge.

The other costs incurred from gastric sleeve surgery or sleeve gastrectomy, include anesthetist fees, pathology fees and surgical assistant fees. You will have your own arrangements with your health fund with regards to the excess payable.

Without health insurance, it can cost up to about $20,000.

Why does weight loss surgery cost so much?

The cost of sleeve gastrectomy and other forms of weight loss surgery including lap bands, gastric bypass has come about because it covers a long program of weight loss. It covers subsequent operations for complications and/or inadequate weight loss in the first two years. As long as the patient is covered in a health fund and can have operations in a private hospital, all subsequent operations are covered. Further charges are incurred when we revise sleeve to bypass or band to sleeve. The upfront cost also covers access to dietitians and any follow up with the surgeon for up to 2 years after surgery.

The cost of weight loss surgery is often recouped within the first two years from savings in food and medications.

How do I raise money for weight loss surgery?

Funds for weight loss surgery, whether it be for lap band, gastric sleeve, gastric bypass can be obtained from superannuation funds. In many cases, it can be claimed as a tax deduction. Individual financial advice should be sought.
