New Guidelines for Gastric Banding

Up till now, the minimum body mass index for gastric banding was 35.

A few weeks ago, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority in the USA has issued new guidelines stating that gastric banding and weight loss surgery should be offered to patients with a body mass index of 30. The FDA controls what procedures and medical interventions can be offered to patients in the USA.

This confirms what specialist weight loss surgeons have known all along in that weight loss surgery can offer benefits to many more people who are overweight and up till now, have not qualified.
